To enable the manufacture of long continuous lengths, necessary for the majority of subsea cable and power umbilical links it is necessary for the manufacturer to splice together shorter lengths of power cores during the cable assembly process. In addition the lay-up (twisting together) of power cores is a sensitive phase of subsea cable manufacture. Should the cores be damaged at this stage then Power CSL’s proven splicing technique can be applied to repair the effected section thereby avoiding the immense cost of complete cable remake.
Submarine Cables during manufacture, installation and in service are subjected to mechanical and hydrostatic forces that are not encountered by conventional underground cables. It is essential that the splices meet and exceed the necessary mechanical, hydrostatic, and electrical requirements of the finished cable, and that they are highly reliable for the life of the subsea system (often up to and beyond 25 years).
Power CSL offer a power core splicing service to subsea cable and umbilical producers with a successful track record of over 30 years. The technique has been used to install over 2,000 core splices incorporated in many oil and gas and offshore renewable energy cable links. Cables and umbilicals containing Power CSL splices have been deployed in a range of water depths, from shallow near shore renewables applications, to ultra-deep subsea oil production systems.
Whilst the splicing process is most commonly applied at the lay-up stage of cable manufacture, Power CSL have developed techniques for splicing power cores post lay up, or even the completed armoured cable.
Our splicing teams are deployed to Clients’ factories around the world and work to rigorous technical and quality standards.
The process can also be applied to dockside jointing of subsea cables and umbilicals when required.
