An umbilical is a composite subsea cable containing various components such as steel tubes or thermoplastic hoses, power cores, fibre optic packages, and control cores. Umbilicals form a critical link in the recovery of hydrocarbons involving subsea production systems. They provide electrical and hydraulic power and electrical and optical signals to operate and control the production centres. The use of high power subsea pumps is becoming more common within deep water production systems and this has introduced the need for high voltage power cores within some umbilical designs.
Power CSL offers its standard factory splicing service for jointing of such power cores during the manufacture of umbilicals. Power CSL has also developed a field splice system for repair of power cores should an umbilical be damaged during installation or operation. The field splice is designed to be contained in the free flooding umbilical joint housing, is compact, and does not rely on oil pressure compensation.
Each field splice design is unique to a given umbilical structure and is extensively validated at our workshop before being approval and release to our clients
